Program Requirements

Session Attendance

Attendance of all sessions is mandatory. Participants are expected to be on time to all sessions, including after breaks, and are expected to communicate with the lead teacher(s) if they are arriving late. If circumstances arise that participants must miss class, participants are expected to communicate which classes or portion of the training they will be missing and must make up any missed hours. Participants are responsible for rescheduling missed hours, requesting any missed course material, and completing any missed assignments. Options for making up missed hours will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and may require additional cost at $125/hour if it requires the lead teacher to meet privately with participants. There will also be scheduled workshops presented by the lead teacher(s) that may be used for make-up hours at the cost of the workshop. Participants have up to 1 year to complete missed hours. If participants do not make up missed hours, they will not graduate the program or receive a certificate.

Class Observations

You are required to observe 8 classes total and write a brief reflection on your observations to be submitted. Your reflection should include what you observed in terms of sequencing, pace, environment, cueing (verbal, visual, physical), class management, and etiquette. This can be done at the hosting studio or another approved studio. Please ask the hosting studio in advance if it is okay to observe a particular class rather than just showing up.

Weekly Class Attendance

You are required to attend at least two classes a week, one of them with the lead teacher(s) or an approved teacher.

Records & Reflections

You are required to keep a practice record, logging your daily meditation, pranayama, and asana practices, what kind of practice you did and how long you practiced for. Each week evaluate how your time management is going, how your practice is feeling, whether there is anything about your approach you wish to change, etc. There will be essays assigned involving reflections from content you’ve read, classes you’ve attended, experiences that you’ve had to practice yoga in all of its many facets. These reflections might include: your understanding of a reading, lesson, or experience; drawing connections between readings, readings and class discussions, readings and current events, readings and real-life examples or experiences (could be your own or a friend’s or someone you know).

Evaluation & Assessment

This training teaches Hatha Yoga including but not limited to the limbs of asana (physical practice), meditation, and pranayama (breathing techniques). You will be required to demonstrate competency in teaching asana, simple meditation, ujjayi pranayama and basic yoga theory and philosophy. There will be ongoing opportunities during class time to demonstrate these skills. There will be abundant physical practice of various standing, seated, and reclined postures as well as study and mindfulness practices.. Your final project will include teaching a 30-minute class to the group or provide a video recording of you teaching a 30-minute class. You are encouraged to practice teaching all of these (not just asana) often with others from the group, friends, family, or anybody else you might enlist and you are encouraged to ask questions of your teachers and mentors along the way.

Yoga Etiquette

Yoga is about becoming more conscious and aware in all aspects of life. This means being considerate and mindful of how your actions affect others. To that end, you are expected to:

  • Be on time.
  • Be prepared. Come with your yoga mat and any other materials you are asked to bring.
  • Pay attention. Take notes if that’s valuable to you.
  • Avoid interrupting. Raise your hand to ask questions.
  • Be attentive and respectful to your teacher. Avoid texting, emailing, and internet use during sessions.
  • Be respectful of others’ space and belongings. Avoid walking on classmates’ mats unless you are partnered for something and you have permission from the owner of that mat.
  • Practice good hygiene and body care, so as not to subject others to body odor.
  • Avoid strong perfumes and colognes; many people are sensitive to these chemicals and may result in headaches, nausea, etc.

Feedback Opportunities

  • Everyone will be required to offer and hear feedback from fellow trainees and the lead teacher(s).
  • Participants are welcome to offer feedback, comments, questions privately in person or through email.
  • A box where anonymous feedback can be left will also be available.
